a morning song...

a morning song

the song of lark pulls rising light,
to taste the prairie's warming bloom.
reeds bent in bow to fluid trill,
which rush upon this measured dance.
swaying this way in pleasing sound,
and that in focused task.
of faithful reach. of fluttered hope
of nightfall rest and morning call.

allies fed on the dying growth,
a marrow filled for daybreak bell.
wings spread upon the open plains,
as prayer for thirst fulfilled pours down.
soft dew drop touch of peace for chore,
laid under skyward cloud.
of earthly life.  of pulsing veins
of thoughts untouched by selfish will.

$46

soft grey metallic laces ruffle shoulder shirt, by hollystalder

"some days my thoughts are just cocoons- all cold, and dull and blind,
they hang from dripping branches in the grey woods of my mind;

i find the gold-dust in my hair, left by their brushing wings."

found...

makes me miss prospect park (i lived just a block from here, in park slope).   i hope the photographers are found and reunited with their film, but it seems that they had one of those unforgettable new york adventures... the kind captured in the memory.  not likely to be soon forgotten, with or without the film

and, now, we're all getting a taste of that photographic adventure

'to do' list...

trying to work through a few of the never ending list of 'to do' projects around the house.  there are pillow covers to be made, chairs to be painted, seats to be recovered...

and i've had a pair of large painted canvas panels (bought several years ago on sale at urban outfitters) just hanging around... they were long ago taken off the walls, the colors and patterns no longer working with my changing decor.  but i knew that they could, and should, be reused in some way.  eventually.

in fact, i even held on to them through the big move from new york (one of those stressed filled times when i gave away an abundance of lovely pieces, simply to avoid having the mind-numbing heaps of boxes and furniture to be moved from sending me over the edge into crazy land).  yet, these two panels somehow made it through!

i finally pulled one out this morning, determined to put it back to use

the thrift store down the street always has a section of 69 cent pillow cases, so i'm often carrying home pretty vintage ones.  some are in perfect condition, just waiting to be laundered and put on the bed.  others, like this pretty blue floral case, have a few flaws, and need to be repurposed.  and, so, the perfect marriage occurs... the canvas panel and the pretty case... adorned with a strip of creamy linen fabric (which is actually from these all cotton ikea curtains... i've lost count of the number of times i've used fabric from these curtains for various projects.  the price is unbeatable!)

so, i've at least accomplished one small task on that list... certain impulsive projects take me all of an hour from idea to completion, while others lay waiting for months at a time

it was last may that i wrote about wanting to make this terrarium.  i knew myself well enough to predict that christmas might arrive before i completed the task, well christmas has come and gone...

diy terrarium, via country living

while in serenbe, ga over the holidays, i spotted a similar terrarium in one of the stores, which looked so delightfully lovely, that i'm determined to keep this project on the 'to do' list!

pretty straw bag...

pretty straw bag, anyone?  head on over to participate in this giveaway on me and alice (google translate is on the bottom of the page) and this lovely may very well come home to you... good luck!

perfect time...

sometimes you just need a few moments to see the world as a kid again...

how i loved climbing into a real photo booth growing up, seeing who could make the goofiest faces.  to capture the memory of whatever exhilarating adventure we were having for the day... a trip to the amusement park, or the zoo, or out shopping and giggling with friends.  the place never really mattered.

the wonderful anticipation of the strip popping out.  laughing and pointing at these small captures of bliss.  a testimony to the thrill of such a day.  giving importance to these little moments you created in the world

in a time when eighteen seemed ancient (when 18 and 36 and 72 are all lumped together in that foreign concept of 'grownup'), childhood let you see the today.  carrying this thin strip of delightful memory in your tiny hand.  you've already moved on to your next adventure

now, as an adult, i so readily give in to the jumping and squealing pleas from my niece and nephew and the kids i used to nanny, of "please, please, pleeeeaaaaase can we do the photo booth!!"; quickly relenting after a few vague grumbles of how these five dollar booths once only cost a simple quarter.  all of us climbing in the now tiny space... giggling as you try to fit your heads in the frame and cross your eyes and stick out your tongue before the next flash goes off

and then you move on...  you've captured four individual nano seconds of perfect time
